I am experienced in teaching a wide range of instruments and disciplines:
Guitar:
I have taught all genres and types of guitar (classical, bass and contemporary styles including jazz, rock and pop.) from beginner through to diploma level. I have a proven track record of success in grade exams, including distinctions at grade 8 in Trinity Guildhall Classical and Rockschool.
I have run sev
eral successful guitar ensembles for a number of years, performing a wide mixture of repertoire. These groups perform in a variety of concerts encouraging pupils’ musicality, ensemble skills and team building.
Pupils are encouraged to explore their creativity through songwriting and improvisation. I frequently record compositions and performances for many of my schools and pupils’ coursework, using Garageband or Pro Tools.
Ukulele:
I have taught Ukulele in larger groups at key stages 1 and 2. Pupils learn to play a selection of enjoyable repertoire. It is an excellent instrument for building musicality and encouraging social skills in early years, and a good precursor to learning another instrument later on.
Theory of mu
sic:
I have taught theory of music for many years and have a record of pupil success in the ABRSM grade 5 exam.
Songwriting and music production workshops:
I have ran a variety of workshops for musicians aged 12 – 26 year olds across South Wales. These have been for the First Campus scheme, part of the University of South Wales’ outreach department and my own company Hot Jam in partnership with Rhondda Cynon Taf’s arts development team. Participants work on cover versions, write their own original songs and are tutored on stage craft and performance technique. At the end of each course there is a showcase gig in a professional venue and some bands have also recorded their original song in a professional recording studio. I have also ran songwriting projects in primary and secondary schools where we have written a song from scratch and recorded this with a band. These projects have been funded by the Pen y Cymoedd Wind Farm Community Fund. The community fund has been established by energy company Vattenfall for the benefit of the communities hosting the Pen Y Cymoedd Wind Farm.
